Amazon Echo Show adds a touchscreen to the Alexa experience You know what Alexa does. She turns on your lights. She plays your songs. She answers your math questions. She wakes you up. She sets timers. She's your canister of helpfulness wherever your voice can be heard in your house. She's your BFF. She's benign AI. She does everything you need, that you should be able to do yourself. And, as long as she doesn't wake up one morning, decide to take over the world, and murder all of us in our beds, she'll be a friend to us all. But Alexa is more than the Echo, that black Pringles Can of Doom we met back in November of 2014. Since the Echo was introduced, Amazon has been fielding a plethora of Alexas, a veritable Alexapalooza of devices. Since Alexa answers "Sorry, I don't know that one," to "Alexa, which Alexa should I buy," we figured we'd help out. By the way, if you're confused about why I might interchangeably talk about Echos and Alexas, it's this: the devices are called … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Dot, Tap, Look, Show: Which Alexa is right for you?

Sometimes, it pays to practically live on Amazon, constantly scouring the sites for pop-up deals. After all, folks who were meandering their way around the online retail giant on Friday, August 18 received a delightful little surprise – a “free” Amazon Echo Dot. Alas, my friends, the deal for this $50 smart speaker has since expired (and really, it doesn’t look like it was ever a real deal anyway — just a fluke). But the next time someone tells you to stop wasting time shopping online, simply point to this and say, “It might result in free stuff.”Apparently, customers who bought an Echo Dot yesterday on Amazon found that they could input an “Audible” discount for a 100-percent coupon code. The discount worked for both black and white models. Sadly, once the alleged deal became slightly more widely publicized, Amazon wised up to the likely mistake, and when additional customers attempted to enter the same discount code, they were met … [Read more...] about Were you one of the lucky few who snagged a free Amazon Echo Dot yesterday?

Amazon announced a slew of new products on Wednesday, and given that a couple of them are colorful and new, you might be tempted to overlook the Echo Plus. After all, it looks just like the original Amazon Echo smart speaker, albeit with a new silver color option. However, if you're a fan of using your Echo to control your smart home, the Echo Plus might be the most important device of the bunch. In addition to promising better sound quality than the original Echo, the Echo Plus comes with a smart home hub built in. Essentially, Amazon is combining the functionality of its original always-listening Echo -- complete with Amazon's popular digital assistant Alexa -- with functionality similar to a SmartThings hub or Wink Hub. The Amazon Echo Plus has a built-in ZigBee antenna, allowing it to act as a smart home hub. ZigBee is a low-power frequency popular with small smart home sensors and things like smart lights and smart locks. The Echo Plus will be able to relay the ZigBee … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Plus packs in better sound and a smart home hub
Prime Music might not be a huge hit, but Amazon reportedly has a new plan for taking on the likes of Apple Music and Spotify. According to Recode, the retail giant is planning a standalone music service that would offer many of the features of its competitors for just $5 a month, but with one major catch -- you'll need an Amazon Echo to use it. This low-cost option could launch alongside a more conventional $10-per-month music streaming service as soon as September, Recode reports. What's significant about Amazon's rumored $5-per-month plan is that it could potentially offer the same unlimited, ad-free music playback that services like Apple Music and Spotify charge $10 per month for. Most $5 monthly music services are limited to basic web radio, such as Pandora One. MORE: What Is Amazon Prime? The big tradeoff, of course, is that you'd be tied down to using that service on Amazon's smart speaker. The Amazon Echo is a great product for music and smart home junkies alike, but one of the … [Read more...] about Amazon’s Rumored $5 Music Streaming Service Has a Big Catch
Amazon Echo. Google Home. Microsoft Invoke. Essential Home. Apple HomePod. Five different speakers, five different platforms vying to be the nerve center for your smart home. All are driven by a voice assistant that will not only dim your lights and lock your doors, but answer questions, make reservations, read email and much, much more. Right now, Amazon has a huge lead in this space, with more than 70 percent market share, according to a report by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. Google is next, with about 24 percent. But the living room is still wide open. Apple is positioning the new $349 HomePod, which goes on sale this December, as a music-first device with Siri smarts, and Microsoft is throwing its hat into the ring with a Cortana-powered speaker. So which one belongs in your home? Apple HomePod: Music First Apple has been a bit ambivalent about its smart-home plans; while you can use both Apple TV and an iPad as a HomeKit hub, it hasn’t … [Read more...] about Apple HomePod vs Amazon Echo and Google Home: How Each Stacks Up
