Premium, 15-inch laptops are the standard for professionals. They’re big enough to handle most workloads and feature large batteries for longevity, yet they’re also small enough to travel with. The 15-inch version of the MacBook Pro is something of a gold standard in this category — even those who work exclusively with Windows or Linux have been known to prefer to use one with Bootcamp. But a new MacBook Pro will cost you around $2,000 in the United States, and better-equipped models are even more expensive. That’s made a sizeable opening for manufacturers to offer more budget-oriented options, ones containing all-metal bodies and high-end components. The Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 is one such machine, with a similar hardware configuration as the MacBook Pro, and a starting price of just $1,500.So which laptop should get your hard-earned cash? That mostly depends upon how much of it you’re willing to part with. If you … [Read more...] about Asus’ Zenbook UX501 is the budget alternative to Apple’s MacBook Pro, but is it better?

15-inch laptops used to be more or less standard, but since smaller, sleeker machines have gained access to more powerful components and long battery life, they’ve become less popular. That doesn’t mean they don’t have their place: both the latest revision of the Dell XPS 15 and the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 are going after customers who usually need their laptops only in one place, but periodically travel with them. They’re both among the most premium machines in this particular market segment. So which one should you buy? The XPS series has been on a hot streak lately, and the XPS 15 inherits the movie star looks and premium materials of its 13-inch brother. But the Zenbook is also rocking premium heritage, complete with a full-metal body and some very high-end hardware. Let’s take a deep look at the strengths and weaknesses of both machines. As would be expected in the build up to the launch of new mainstream processors from Intel, both Dell and Asus are planning to debut new versions of some of their more popular notebooks. The XPS 13 and ZenBook UX303 will both be refreshed with new Skylake hardware in the near future, with some of the first already appearing on European retailer websites. While both GSX Digital (now pulled) and LASystem’s listings (via Liliputing) feature the hardware in question, they are “out of stock” for now, so don’t get all excited and hop on to order them just yet. However we can shove some more coal into the hype train’s engine, as these new notebooks have some very tasty specifications.Dell’s new XPS 13 is listed as coming fitted with a 13.3-inch, 3,200 x 1,800-resolution touchscreen display — which is edging towards 4K standards — powered by a sixth-generation Skylake Core i7-6500U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Battery life is … [Read more...] about Skylake release to see Dell XPS 13 and Asus ZenBooks updated
This week at CES 2014, Asus announced a bunch of new products, including a hefty 28-inch 4K monitor, along with a motherboard which Asus claims is the first to include support for SATA Express. Asus’ 4k monitor, dubbed the PB287Q (pictured above), is equipped with a crazy-high resolution of 3,840 x 2,160, which is four times higher than 1080p. There’s more to the PB287Q than ultra high resolution though. Asus claims that its Splended Plus tech, which is embedded within the monitor, decreases eyestrain by minimizing the blue component of light from the monitor’s backlight. Asus also promises to keep images stable and sharp with their Flicker-free tech. Port selection includes HDMI, DisplayPort and more.Asus describes its Z87-Deluxe/SATA Express motherboard as a “concept,” which most notable includes SATA Express Ports, with Asus claiming that its the first motherboard to do so. SATA Express claims data transfer rates as high as 1GB/s. Asus … [Read more...] about Asus announces 4K monitor, SATA Express motherboard at CES 2014
With Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 right around the corner, we’re seeing a number of rumors and tons of leaked information about all kinds of mobile products. While MWC primarily focuses on smartphones, it also covers other mobile devices including wearables and notebook PCs.A number of companies are expected to introduce new notebooks at MWC 2017 that didn’t quite make the cut at CES 2017, and some information has leaked indicating that Asus is one of those firms. Specifically, it looks like a new Asus ZenBook Pro appears to be on the way, as Notebookitalia reports.Notebookitalia often gains access to such early information, and if this particular intel is correct, then Asus plans to introduce a significant update to the ZenBook Pro line that it last updated in 2015. The new machine’s model, according to the leak, will be the Asus ZenBook Pro UX550, and it will represent a strong option for power users looking for a large-screen notebook to compete with … [Read more...] about New Asus ZenBook Pro could be a real beast with GeForce GTX 1060 graphics
On Monday during Computex 2016 in Taipei, Asus held a press conference revealing a number of new products, three of which were 2-in-1 hybrids that were revealed as soon as company chairman Jonney Shih hit the stage. These included the Asus Transformer 3, the Asus Transformer 3 Pro, and the ZenBook 3.ZenBook 3For starters, the new ZenBook 3 sports a metal unibody construction and an aerospace-grade aluminum alloy design, with the chassis ranging from 11.9mm to 3.5mm in thickness (or thinness). The display’s bezel is rather thin too, measuring 16mm thick on the bottom, 11.5mm on the top, and 7mm on the sides, resulting in an 82-percent screen to body ratio. Overall, the new laptop weighs only two pounds, making the ZenBook not only light, but extremely thin.According to Tsang, the specs include up to an Intel Core i7 processor, up to a 1TB SSD, and up to 16GB of memory clocked at 2,133MHz. There’s also support for USB Type-C ports, and a 40Wh battery promising … [Read more...] about Super-thin systems headline Asus’ Zenbook brand at Computex 2016
Last year we declared the Asus ZenBook UX305 the best budget ultrabook of 2015, for delivering performance and quality that belied its price. It's no surprise Asus has barely altered the blueprint for the 2016 model. The most notable difference is the CPU. The previous model's Broadwell-based Core M-5Y10 is now replaced by Intel's Skylake Core m3-6Y30 chip.Other than that, there's little detectable difference. That means while the previous model's strengths remain, so do its weaknesses. As before, the 13.3-inch, 1920-by-1080 IPS screen is merely average. There's still no keyboard backlighting, and the trackpad, while adequate, has an unusual bounce to it. Also, in the light of 2016, it would be nice to see USB-C on the UX305 for charging—and as a replacement for the funky micro-HDMI port. Fortunately, those annoyances are overshadowed by the UX305's assets. It's superthin at less than 13mm, as well as reasonably light at 2 pounds, 10.3 ounces. It continues to be fanless, … [Read more...] about Asus ZenBook UX305 review: Still the best budget ultrabook around
The Asus ZenBook Flip has a cute name, and that’s kind of the vibe we get from using it, too. At just $749, it’s a notebook that doesn’t try to be the most powerful or most advanced 2-in-1. Instead, the Flip offers a slim and portable design that’s easy to afford and easy to use.Really, this laptop reminds us a little of the netbooks that existed about 10 years ago. However, unlike those painfully underpowered systems, the Flip’s Core m processor can actually get work done. Storage is plentiful, too: Asus offers two versions of this 2-in-1, and they’re essentially the same aside from the SSD. The base model comes with a 256GB SSD for $699, and the second model comes with a 512GB SSD for $50 more. Our review unit sported the 512GB drive, but our critique applies to both models. The ZenBook Flip’s most notable feature is its incredible slenderness. At 0.54 inches thick and 2.8 pounds, this convertible is thinner and lighter than rival 2-in-1 … [Read more...] about Asus ZenBook Flip (UX360CA-DBM2T) review: A sleek, affordable 2-in-1 for everyday tasks
Buying a cheaper Windows tablet always means answering the same question: Can I do as much as I want while still paying less? In the case of the $399 Asus Transformer Mini (T102HA), the answer is yes, but just barely.Your first impression of the Mini will almost certainly be of an updated Microsoft Surface 3 (now discontinued), with a redesigned, sturdy keyboard and a stylus to boot. But that image is only skin-deep. Inside its thoughtfully designed exterior lies a number of mediocre components. It’s like buying a shiny Red Delicious apple at a supermarket. What’s inside isn’t usually the crisp, sweet crunch you'd hoped for. But let’s start with the positives. Asus clearly followed where Microsoft led: While the Mini adopts the same compact form factor of the Surface 3, the faux fabric backing the keyboard probably will remind you of the Surface Pro 4. The Mini measures 10.2 inches by 6.7 inches by 0.55 inches (13.9 mm) in laptop mode, and weighs a … [Read more...] about Asus Transformer Mini review: This 2-in-1 delivers good-enough computing on the cheap
The Asus ZenBook Pro UX501VW is a terrific value for workers with graphically intensive workloads. The 15-inch workhorse laptop offers all the perks of a MacBook Pro — including a premium metal design, powerful performance and a super-high-res display — for about $1,000 less than Apple's machine, at least if you won’t comparable specs. No, that's not a typo — starting at just $1,499, Asus' system really is that affordable. That makes it a nearly unbeatable deal for anyone whose job involves 3D software or photo/video editing. [For more information on how we test mobile devices, visit our testing methodology page.] The ZenBook Pro looks and feels every bit as premium as the MacBook Pro. I especially love the look of the aluminum lid, which sports a handsome brushed-metal effect. The all-metal system feels really sturdy, without a hint of flex in the lid or keyboard deck. But you'll make one big sacrifice by opting for the ZenBook Pro over rival laptops: … [Read more...] about Asus ZenBook Pro UX501VW Review: Is It Good for Business?
