Less than 24 hours since his foreboding question to a Glastonbury crowd, Johnny Depp has issued an apology. During remarks that proceeded a film screening, Depp suggested Donald Trump should be in attendance before asking "when was the last time an actor assassinated a president?" The uncomfortable joke sparked headlines and controversy, and now the actor is back-pedaling. SEE ALSO: Johnny Depp had a question about Donald Trump's assassination at Glastonbury “I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump,” Depp said in a statement to People. “It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone.” Meanwhile, The White House has also issued a statement about Depp-gate, and brought Democrats into it, of course. “President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it’s sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead. I hope that some of … [Read more...] about Johnny Depp would like to apologize for that ‘bad joke’ about Donald Trump’s assassination
Comedian and occasional Optus chief executive Paul O'Sullivan took up the microphone again last week as he continued his campaign of targeting Telstra with bad jokes. Speaking at an Australian-Israel Chamber of Commerce (AICC) event in Melbourne last Thursday, O'Sullivan said the business group was just one of the many it sponsors. "Another one of our sponsorships is Cirque Du Soleil -- an amazing troupe of artists and acrobats from Canada. They are currently touring Australia and come to Melbourne next year," he said. "But of course there has also been plenty of media coverage about another group of North American performers," continued the Optus boss in a reference to Telstra's new management team led by CEO Sol Trujillo. Trujillo and his men "have stunned Australia with their very public displays of tightrope walking, fire eating and backflipping", according to O'Sullivan. "Today I can expose this for what it really is -- a simple piece of copycat guerrilla marketing," he … [Read more...] about Optus boss cracks more Telstra jokes
Given my choice of desktops, I'm running Linux, but over the years Windows has gone from being a bad joke of a desktop operating systems--Windows ME and Vista--to being a reasonably good choice-Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7. But Windows 8? What the heck is Microsoft thinking? After looking at Metro, Windows 8's default interface, for the last month, all I see a lame, reactionary response to iPad and Android. In a broader sense, it's Microsoft's response to the move away from the desktop to smartphones and tablets. Great Debate: Is Microsoft's next operating system headed in the right direction? Microsoft has made it clear that while there will be room for the Windows 7's Aero style interface, in Windows 8, Microsoft really wants everyone working with the Metro interface and applications. When I look at Metro, I see gaudy colors, boxy designs, applications that can either run as a small tile or as full screen with no way to re-size or move windows. Where have I seen this … [Read more...] about Windows 8: A bad bet
“I’m f**ked in the head alright, I think I’ma SHOOT UP A KINDERGARTEN AND WATCH THE BLOOD OF THE INNOCENT RAIN DOWN.”Those words were posted to Facebook by 18-year-old Justin Carter in early 2013, two months after the hideous massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Another Facebook users scolded Carter for his provocative post. Someone from Canada reported him to police.Today, the Austin, Texas, teen – a regular kid, according to his family, a fan of League of Legends and Minecraft, a harmless dork, not a murderer – may spend the next 10 years in jail for those words – words that were meant as a joke. A bad joke. A mean, hurtful joke. A joke I cannot imagine evoking laughter from a single person. But a joke all the same. When a joke is taken seriously, the wannabe comedian often comes across as a complete tool.“I thought as soon as the police talk to him, they will see it was a joke and let him go,” … [Read more...] about Are you kidding me? As the mass online blackout against the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) and the “PROTECT IP Act” (PIPA) climbs over its midpoint, more and more citizens are becoming aware of these contentious pieces of anti-piracy legislation. Well, sorta. If Twitter is any indication — and, with thousands of popular sites offline today, it’s one of the few indicators we have left — it seems as though the acronym “SOPA” is being confused with “soap,” the magical cleaning product. Besides a smattering of befuddlement over the similar spellings, many users are taking the opportunity to show off their “skills” as comedians. Here, a sampling of the best-worst examples:For more stupid tweets about SOPA, Wikipedia and the blackout in general, check out this one-day joke Twitter account, @herpderpedia. It hasn't been the best of months for Anonymous, the loose hacktivist collective that likes to view itself as the most potent threat on the Web to big government, big business and those who do not share its views on pretty much anything -- law enforcement, the environment, internet freedom, copyright laws, politics etc.Several of its recent claims have been exposed as not just inflated, but outright fabrications.Earlier this month, AntiSec, an offshoot of Anonymous, posted more than 1 million Apple Unique Device Identifiers (UDID) to Pastebin, and claimed it had stolen more than 12 million of them from an FBI agent's laptop in March. The group claimed to have personal mailing addresses and phone numbers besides the UDIDs, plus device tokens for the Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) for numerous types of Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. The FBI immediately denied that any of its computers had been compromised. Apple said it had never provided UDIDs to the FBI. … [Read more...] about Anonymous had bad month, but no less ‘reliable’
As the idea that TSA policies are a joke becomes ever more popular with the American people, one TSA screener decides to prove them right — literally.Probably the most famous modern IT security and cryptography expert in the world, Bruce Schneier, coined the term "security theater" in his book Beyond Fear. The book refers to security procedures designed to give the impression that something is being done to enhance security without actually providing any real security benefit at all. Since then, the term has increasingly been applied to airport security measures, particularly those enacted by the United States' Transportation Security Administration. There is some good reason for the harsh scrutiny applied to TSA policies. Completely aside from the complaints about invasions of privacy and annoying complexity added to the process of flying, some very dramatic failures have affected the image of the TSA very negatively. The implementation and use of a "Terror Watch List" has … [Read more...] about Are TSA policies a bad joke?

There has been a running joke lately that our laptops might as well be PCs because we always have to keep them attached to the cord. Unfortunately, wireless charging for laptops hasn't happened yet (someone is working on that, right?), so we need to make the most of what we do have. Get In Stock Alerts on Twitter for SNES Classic, Switch and More One of the biggest problems with battery life doesn't have to do with the battery at all. In fact, it has to do with what browser you use - and for those of us who use Chrome (guilty), it isn't good news.Microsoft put on a demonstration where four identical laptops ran four different browsers, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Microsoft Edge, to see which one was the worst on the battery. Chrome killed the battery. The experiment had the laptops go onto the same popular websites like Amazon, Facebook, YouTube, and Wikipedia until the battery died. A viral video can build up a brand in hours — and knock it down even faster. The same tool that can create priceless free publicity can easily become a double-edged sword, and plenty of companies in recent years have seen the downside of online videography. Here are some the worst viral videos gone wrong: While many have long joked about the unsavory things that go on in restaurant kitchens, several Domino's Pizza employees in North Carolina left nothing to the imagination in 2009 when they taped their exploits and put them online for all to see.In videos posted on YouTube, a Domino's employee prepares sandwiches for delivery while putting cheese up his nose, mucus on the food, and violating other health-code standards as a fellow employee looks on and provides a play-by-play description. While the employees were immediately fired and charged with felony counts of delivering prohibited food, the online video quickly … [Read more...] about Caught on Video: Employees Behaving (Very) Badly
