Amazon has announced that its Alexa-powered Echo Spot is officially available to buy outside the U.S. as the company opens preorders in the U.K. and Germany. The ecommerce giant unveiled the latest Echo incarnation back in September when it launched the Echo Spot for $130. The device is similar to the Echo Show in that as it has a screen, except here it’s squeezed into an alarm clock-style form factor. Sporting a 2.5-inch circular screen, the Echo Spot isn’t really designed for watching movies, but it could prove useful for video calls, short news snippets, weather forecasts, and so on. As per its form factor, it’s also designed for use as a bedside alarm clock. Above: Echo Spot As with other Echo devices, the Echo Spot integrates with the broader smart home, meaning you can use your voice to control your lights and thermostats, set alarms, request weather updates, and play music via the built-in two-watt speaker. The missing piece of the Echo puzzle - the Echo Spot - is now available to pre-order in the UK. The little brother to the Echo Show, the Echo Spot makes for a perfect bedside companion. Announced alongside the refreshed Echo models late in 2017, the Echo Spot has only been available in the US until now. With deliveries expected from 24 January, the Echo Spot will cost you £119.99, or you can save some cash by buying two for £199.98. The Echo Spot is powered by Alexa, offering you all the skills and fun commands that you'll find elsewhere. It can control all your connected smart home devices, play music from common sources like Amazon Music, Spotify or TuneIn, as well as supporting the Alexa Calling functions. Thanks to that 2.5-inch display, you'll get a little more information on display, so you can glance for the time, weather, see the music that's playing or ask for other details. It will even play Amazon Video, so if you're stirring risotto on the hob and want to sneakily … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Spot now available in the UK, pre-order today for £119
Amazon's not declaring it a redo, but the Echo Spot, the company's latest Alexa-powered smart speaker — smart alarm clock is probably more accurate — might as well be one. The Spot is everything the clunky and expensive Echo Show released this past summer should have been. I'm the happy owner of two Echo devices (the original Echo and an Echo Dot), and thought I couldn't possibly have room for another, but the Spot proved me wrong. SEE ALSO: 9 reasons why 2018's smartphones are going to kick major ass As a longtime Echo user, I was excited to hear Amazon was launching an a new smart speaker with a built-in screen. Using Alexa voice controls is still as intuitive as ever, but there are times when having a screen is useful for displaying visual information. Like when you want to see your to-do or reminders list, or watch a movie trailer, or see, not hear, the weekly weather forecast. But the device Amazon gave us was far from what I, and I think many people, had hoped for. … [Read more...] about Amazon’s Echo Spot is the blueprint for all future smart speakers
Amazon's new Echo Spot is the perfect smart alarm clock for your bedroom, except for one super annoying thing: it has a camera on it. Alarm clocks haven't exactly been popular for a long time. Most people just use their phone as an alarm clock, since it’s often found charging overnight next to their bed. But studies have shown that using a smartphone right up until we go to sleep and looking at it first thing when we wake up is perhaps not a healthy lifestyle. A smart alarm clock provides a way to get your phone out of your bedroom, yet still maintain useful things like weather reports, smart home device control, and of course, telling the time, without including distractions like email, social media apps, or a web browser. The $129.99 Echo Spot is taking another run at this problem, and it's the most promising attempt since, well, ever. The best way to put the Spot in context with Amazon's other Echo speakers is one of those SAT analogies: the Echo Spot is to the Echo Show what … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Spot review: an almost-perfect smart alarm clock
Hardware The Echo Spot is quite possibly the cutest product Amazon has ever made. Its circular display and spherical body lend it the charm of a retro alarm clock. Of course, the Echo Spot can also be used in other rooms in the house -- it's pretty useful in the kitchen too -- but it'll look right at home on your nightstand. Sticking with the alarm clock theme, the Spot is relatively compact and lightweight. It measures 4.1 x 3.8 x 3.6 inches and weighs 14.8 ounces (0.9 pound), making it easy to move around. The whole thing is fashioned out of a sturdy matte plastic, available in either black or white. I'm a fan of the white model myself -- the contrasting black bezels surrounding the circular display add some visual interest. That display is indeed a full circle; there's no so-called flat tire at the bottom. It measures 2.5 inches across and has a 480 x 480 resolution. That might sound terrible, but for such a tiny screen, it's more than adequate. Plus, the Spot isn't something you'll … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Spot review: As smart as it is cute
I’ll just come out and say it: Amazon’s newest Echo hits the sweet spot. The Echo Spot fills a hole in Amazon's Alexa lineup that I didn’t even know was there. With no less than six smart speakers, plus a variety of tablets and apps, I thought Amazon had its bases more than covered. There are Alexa options to handle every room, budget, and situation in need of a smart speaker. And if you can't find something in Amazon's stable, you can choose from a bevy of third-party Alexa-compatible devices. But while the Spot isn't the first Echo device with a screen, it is the first seemingly designed to complement whatever room you put it in. It might not stand out like the Show, but it doesn't fade into the background either.Simply put, the Spot has something the other Alexa-powered devices in my house don’t: good looks. It’s the first Echo that I didn’t actively try to hide. In fact, I tried a few different locations in my kitchen before I was happy with its … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Spot review: This Alexa speaker is as sharp as it is smart
Earlier this year Amazon introduced an Alexa voice-enabled Echo speaker with a built-in display called the Echo Show. At $230 for one and $360 for two -- you get $100 off if you buy two -- it was was a little expensive for some people. (It's now available in the UK for £200.) But in December Amazon will begin shipping a smaller Echo with an integrated display called the Echo Spot for $130. It comes in white and black and will be available in the UK and Germany early next year (sorry, Australia.) (Pricing in those countries hasn't been announced; $130 converts to about £100.) You could call the Echo Spot a mini Echo Show but it's probably more like an Echo Dot with a screen. That's because the Spot only has a 2-watt speaker and is more akin, sound-wise, to the Dot than the Show. Still, it feels appropriately weighty for a $130 device, with the same grippy texture of the Echo Show. If Amazon's goal was to find a middle-ground between its cheapest and most … [Read more...] about Amazon Echo Spot is kind of like an Echo Dot with a screen
