Free Comic Book Day. Comics retailers all around the world have a selection of sponsored free comic books to give away. It's become an annual rite for my son and I to visit our neighborhood comics and collectibles store to snag some free goodies. This is the fifth year the event has been held. Visit the site, enter your zip code, and find the participating retailer closest to you. From the event site: Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the readers, and have survived: the dominance of radio, the ubiquity of television, the spread of color and sound motion pictures, the rise of videogames, and the Internet. That's worth celebrating in our book, and as this site continues to grow and evolve, you'll see even more information … [Read more...] about It’s Free Comic Book Day
Free comic book day
How can you not love a world where once a year, comic book retailers across North America and the world open their doors and offer comics gratis to anyone who drops in?That's exactly what's happening tomorrow -- on Free Comic Book Day. According to the official Web site, "Free Comic Book Day is a single day -- the first Saturday in May each year -- when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores."To be sure, there are catches. First, not every retailer that sells comic books is going to be handing over the goods (I'm looking at you, Wal-Mart). And secondly, even with those that do, don't expect to grab the book of your choice. No one's giving away Action Comics No. 1 or Superman No. 1. Instead, your choices will be limited to what's on offer. That means that those visiting, say, Cards and Comics Central in San Francisco, will be able to grab up to five books from a selection … [Read more...] about No free lunch? It's a good time to be a comics fan: Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow, and Iron Man 2 opens next Friday, May 7 in the United States (the film reportedly opened at number one is six overseas markets).I was thinking of our Geekend comics fans when I read Metacritic's list of the best and the worst comic book movies. Since it's been almost three years since we covered this in Geekend (though Jay Garmon's post was based on ratings from Rotten Tomatoes), I thought it would be fun a topic to revisit. The movies in the following best and worst lists include graphic novels and manga but not comic strips (blogger Nick Hyman says they will cover those films in a separate feature) in Metacritic's database, as well as a few older titles that aren't on Metacritic. 1. American Splendor 2. Persepolis 3. Ghost World 4. Superman: The Movie 5. Spider-Man 2 6. The Dark Knight 7. A History of Violence 8. Iron Man 9. … [Read more...] about Best and worst comic book movies
My first comic book was a reprint of The Amazing Spider-Man stories from 1962 and 1963 in a bound book form. It was given to me by my father, who though that I might get a kick out of it. I guess he was right — I literally read the book until it fell apart; fortunately, before that sad day, I discovered other comic books.I became a regular reader of Iron Man, Thor, Batman, and The Flash. Then I discovered Tales from the Crypt; some of those rich stories still haunt my nightmares years later. One day, when thumbing through an old Tales from the Crypt to reread one of my favorite stories, the words based on the story Microcosmic God by Theodore Sturgeon stood out. This really didn't mean anything until a little bit of serendipity occurred in a bookstore. There was a three-volume set of books called The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, with Volume One edited by Robert Silverberg and Volumes Two A and Two B edited by Ben Bova. In Volume One, there was the story — the one from Tales … [Read more...] about Mark your calendar for Free Comic Book Day
