Here we go again: Mac vs PC, Apple vs Microsoft. This time around, it's the battle of the top-tier all-in-ones, the upcoming iMac Pro up against the Surface Studio. They're both high-end devices primarily targeting creative and media professionals, but there are as many differences as there are similarities between them, and there's a lot to break down. Want to read more about the iMac Pro? We have an iMac Pro review and our comparison of the iMac vs the iMac Pro. You can also read our comparison of all the 'pro' Macs. Price and availability Before we dive into the hardware itself, let's take a look at two of the most important questions: when can you buy them, and how much do they cost? The Surface Studio is out now in both the UK and the US, and starts from £2,999/$2,999 for the base model. There are two other configurations available, with the mid-range going for £3,549/$3,499, and the top-tier version priced at £4,249/$4,199. The latest addition to Microsoft’s lineup of Surface products is the Surface Studio, an all-in-one computer designed for artists and other creative professionals. From what we have seen so far, it’s an impressive device. The Surface Studio could be a shot across the bow to other all-in-one manufacturers like HP, whose latest Envy 27 model is one of the best all-in-one desktops around. In this clash of the expensive titans, who will prevail? While we cannot say for sure until we test the Studio for ourselves, we can make a preliminary ruling by examining the available specs. Microsoft announced huge updates to its Surface line of tablets on Wednesday, as well as a brand-new Surface Studio, an all-in-one Windows 10 workstation that takes aim at the iMac. Microsoft’s first desktop PC has a 28-inch touchscreen display that you can stand upright and control with a mouse and keyboard, or tilt toward you to use with the Surface Pen or your fingers, directly on the screen. While just this morning I was making fun of the idea of a touchscreen Mac, the first images of the Surface Studio have me eating my words a little bit. The hinge, which Microsoft calls the “Zero Gravity Hinge,” lets the display tilt toward you all the way to a 20-degree angle, kind of like a drafter’s table—and very similar to the angle I get when I prop a 12.9-inch iPad Pro on the Twelve South ParcSlope stand. It’s a comfortable way to work.Unlike the Surface Pro tablets and Surface Book, the Surface Studio is meant to live on a desktop—the 28-inch, … [Read more...] about Spec for spec, the iMac is a bargain over the Surface Studio
We’ve never seen anything quite like the Surface Studio. No other all-in-one boasts a massive 28-inch 4.5K touchscreen that glides down to serve as a digital easel, a Surface Pen for inking, and an optional Surface Dial that you can spin and tap to navigate menus. Presto! You’re a digital creator. We applaud this refreshing example of what a PC could be, and we’ll talk a lot about the new things it can do for you in this review. But we also expect the Studio to be more than just an aspirational machine that can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars more than its competition. In real life, it still needs to be a productivity PC, a decent gaming platform, and the embodiment of the Windows 10 Creators Update. We’ll take a close look at these fundamentals, too.A typical PC buyer has a budget, then seeks out a PC that includes the most powerful components they can afford. That’s the wrong approach for someone considering the Surface Studio, where the components … [Read more...] about Microsoft Surface Studio review: Creativity is a sublime, pricey experience
The Surface Studio is an all-in-one PC with premium specs, designed to wow professional artists, designers, architects and other creatives. While the $2,999 price tag will deter most consumers, Microsoft seems to be targeting the Studio at design professionals, who would otherwise be using Apple Macs alongside specialist devices like Wacom's Cintiq drawing tablet. The Studio is a machine with a lot to recommend it, but one that could still be a leap too far for creatives already heavily invested in alternative tech. SEE: Check out all of TechRepublic's smart person's guides What it is: The Surface Studio is a high-end, all-in-one PC aimed at being a drafting table and canvas for creatives. Why it matters: The machine marks Microsoft's first venture into designing desktop PCs and may put pressure on Apple and other manufacturers to crank up specs on competing machines. Who it is for: Artists, designers, architects — creative professionals who want a machine that shows off … [Read more...] about Microsoft Surface Studio: The smart person’s guide
Microsoft’s Surface Studio charges aggressively into territory once held by Apple, combining an elegant design, a massive, lovely display, and an eye-popping price tag. We had a chance to try the company’s first-ever desktop after it was announced Wednesday morning. Here’s what stood out during the demo. Although the specs fall slightly short of state-of-the-art, everything felt extremely fast and responsive. The base $2,999 offering includes a 6th-generation (Skylake) Core i5, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M 2GB GPU, a 1TB hybrid drive, and 8GB of memory. At the highest end, the $4199 model includes a 6th-gen Core i7, 32GB of memory, and a GTX980M GPU, along with 2TB of storage. What I like most about the Surface Studio is how it pivots, literally, from a single-purpose workstation into an easel for artistic creation or sharing. A pair of hinges gracefully lifts the massive 28-inch, 4500x3000 PixelSense display from a nearly vertical position to … [Read more...] about Hands-on: Microsoft’s Surface Studio is a Windows PC for the Mac crowd
Microsoft’s Surface Studio is the ultimate Windows All-in-One, the showcase for Windows 10’s biggest innovations—especially some of those coming in the Creators Update. We just received our Surface Studio loaner and couldn’t wait to open the box. The very big box. Watch as we unwrap everything and talk about the specs. This highest-end SKU has a mobile Core i7 Skylake CPU, 32GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD with 2TB HDD, and Windows 10 Pro. You can’t miss the 28-inch PixelSense Display with a dazzling 4500x3000 resolution. The Surface Pen we know well from using the exact same model with the Surface Pro 4. The keyboard and mouse seem almost like afterthoughts compared to the Surface Studio’s build quality, but we’ll tell you more about them once we’ve used them for a while. The Surface Dial is the most unusual part of the Surface Studio. You place the puck-like Dial on the display—its bottom surface sticks surprisingly well, … [Read more...] about Watch us unbox the Microsoft Surface Studio
Dell's getting ready to take on Microsoft's Surface Studio in 2017.During a promotional video at Adobe Max, Dell revealed a Surface Studio-like PC aimed at creative professionals—but don't call it copycat device. HP introduced the first creative-oriented PC, the Sprout, two years ago, and Dell says it's been working on what it calls the Dell Smart Desk (working title) for about three years. Shortly after Adobe Max, the company took to Twitter to say the Smart Desk will be formally announced during the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The Smart Desk actually appears a bit more complicated than the Surface Studio. Microsoft’s new enterprise product is essentially a massive tablet that can sit at a comfortable angle for touch interaction for long periods. The Dell smart desk, meanwhile, is a combination of a Surface Studio-like tablet with a regular computer monitor. Dell’s version even has its own rendition of the Surface Dial that has also been under … [Read more...] about Dell’s futuristic Smart Desk PC will challenge Microsoft’s Surface Studio
With its superslim profile and effortlessly adjustable hinge, Microsoft's new Surface Studio looks like a Cintiq killer. The pen-equipped Studio (which starts at $2,999) is clearly targeted at creative professionals who want to use the system for work. And it's certainly flashier than the Cintiq 27QHD ($2,299 without touch, $2,799 with touch), which is currently the industry-leading pen display for professional artists and designers. But as impressive as the Surface Studio is, Wacom's Cintiq still has several key advantages. Here's a point-by-point breakdown of how these two devices match up.Here's the biggest difference between the Studio and Cintiq: The Studio is its own computer (its processor and other hardware are tucked away in its base), while the Cintiq is just a monitor that must be hooked up to a separate computer to use. There are pros and cons to either arrangement. With the Surface Studio, you get a compact system that's really easy to set up. There's no need to purchase a … [Read more...] about Surface Studio vs. Cintiq: Which Is Better for Business?
Editor's Note: Microsoft recently announced the release of the Surface Book 2, which comes with a new 15-inch screen and improved specs. It starts at $1,499 and will be available for pre-order on Nov. 9. We have not tested or reviewed the Surface Book 2 yet, but when we do we will report our findings. When it launched in 2015, Microsoft's Surface Book was easily the most versatile machine for creative professionals on the market. No competitor could come close to matching its combination of a flexible 2-in-1 design, detachable display, top-notch pen support and sheer graphical power. And now this Swiss Army knife of a laptop has gotten a big upgrade, making it an even more impressive mobile studio – albeit a pricey one. The refreshed Surface Book offers twice the graphics capabilities of last year’s model, thanks to the included “Performance Base” keyboard dock that houses a beefed-up GPU. But while the system earns high marks for its versatility, … [Read more...] about Microsoft Surface Book with Performance Base Review: Is It Good for Business?
