Video: Apps to help with disaster preparation At the crack of dawn on September 4, I left my home in Central Florida. At the time, I had no idea that I'd never return. Unlike earthquakes, there is usually time to prepare for a hurricane. I lived through the Loma Prieda earthquake in the San Francisco area. One minute everything was fine. Then, the entire world shook for 15 seconds. There was no warning. It just happened. Hurricanes are different. Because of satellites, we get warnings. We get weeks of dread. The National Hurricane Center was aware of Hurricane Irma in late August. By September 3, it was still far away from Florida, but the track map indicated it was going to make a hard landfall in a week. That night, a Sunday, the Irma track map updated to show that the Category 5 storm was aimed directly at my town. The National Hurricane Center's little black dot for 2AM on the following Monday (seven days later) was right over where we live. The governor was recommending … [Read more...] about Road tech: How I left Florida to escape Irma, and never went back

Google has been making smartphones for years now — sort of. It has been dipping its toe in the water since 2010, but seven years later it still hasn’t jumped in. Limited stock, reliance on manufacturer partnerships, and off-the-shelf components don’t add up to the mass market Google phone we’ve all been waiting for since the birth of Android. The freshly unveiled Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL look to be accomplished handsets, but certain models are already “Out of stock” on the Google Store, and many others now have longer delivery estimates from 2 to 3 weeks up to 6 to 7 weeks.“I wish we had a few more of them to go around.”We’ve been here before. On stage at the launch event, after expressing his pride over the original Pixel phones, Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of hardware, wisecracked, “I wish we had a few more of them to go around.”Just three hours after the launch event, the same stock shortages … [Read more...] about When will Google finally go all-in on smartphones?
Not all that Facebook touches turns to gold. In a rare admission of defeat (if you can call it that), the social media giant has announced plans to shut down Parse, the mobile developer platform it acquired back in 2013 for a cool $85 million. In a blog post released Thursday, Kevin Lacker, Parse’s co-founder, wrote that the team would begin “winding down the Parse service” immediately, and that “Parse will be fully retired after a year-long period ending on January 28, 2017.” He continued, “We’re proud that we’ve been able to help so many of you build great mobile apps, but we need to focus our resources elsewhere.”The decision is a surprising one, especially given Facebook’s purported move just ten months ago to expand Parse with hopes of helping developers build apps for the Internet of Things. At the time, it seemed like a continuation of Facebook’s quest for worldwide dominance, but now, plans appear … [Read more...] about Parse is no more — Facebook shuts down its mobile developer platform
Sometimes father does know best. At least that is what the entrepreneurs we asked had to say. Whether it was their strong work ethic, their never-give-up attitude or their advice to just believe in yourself, these Dads inspired their children to become the successful people they are today. My Dad was definitely the inspiration for starting my own business. My "Papi" came from Mexico when he was in his 20's after meeting my mother, falling in love and retiring from bullfighting. He married, had five children and a mortgage when he decided to open his first jewelry store. He has also proven himself to be a "risk taker" facing bulls in the ring, as an immigrant starting a new life in a new country, and as an entrepreneur with lots to risk. Yes, he has always taken the bulls by the horns and moved forward without fear.-- Darlene Tenes, CasaQ My dad was self-employed for as long as I can remember. He taught me at a very young age that anything is possible -- you just need to work hard and … [Read more...] about Father Knew Best: Entrepreneurs Tell How Dad Inspired Them
