Samsung experienced just about one of the most up-and-down years a company can in 2016, excelling out of the gate with the impressive Galaxy S7, before struggling through the back half of the year after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. The South Korean tech giant needed to hit it out of the park with this year’s flagship, and so it took its time, neglecting to reveal the Galaxy S8 during Mobile World Congress in February, and overhauling its safety protocol in the meantime. Now, at long last, Samsung has returned — and made a statement in the process. The Galaxy S8 looks to be one of the most significant leaps forward, particularly in design, of any new product in the company’s flagship lineage. But last year’s Galaxy was no slouch either, and although the S8’s exterior certainly fits the revolutionary bill, it remains to be seen if Samsung’s latest boasts enough meaningful improvements to necessitate an upgrade — especially when the S7 … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S7 vs. Galaxy S8: Is this year’s ‘Next Big Thing’ really worth it?
After throwing every conceivable feature into the Galaxy S6, there couldn’t possibly be anything left to impress us with the Galaxy S7, right?Fortunately for Samsung, that’s not the case. The Galaxy S7 isn’t particularly revolutionary, but it does improve upon what made the Galaxy S6 so great. You can expect features like a bigger battery, a faster processor, and better low-light performance from both rear- and front-facing cameras.Samsung also appears to have finally resolved how big to make its Edge line of smartphones. The Galaxy S7 Edge is now a phablet device, and it’s especially geared towards those looking for a productivity device with a chassis design that stands out from all the other flat, black rectamgles making the rounds. They say if It ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Samsung reprised the Galaxy S6’s metal and glass design for the Galaxy S7, though it shaved a few millimeters off the edges and dramatically rounded the corners so that … [Read more...] about Hands on with the evolutionary Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge
If CES is the party deck of the mobile technology world, Mobile World Congress is the engine room. It's where the world's carriers meet infrastructure vendors and telecom ministers, and Very Serious Business takes place. Handset makers from the top tier to the bargain basement all clamor for attention and, with any luck, something interesting will turn up.This year, three major vendors unveiled flagship phones, each addressing what the companies seem to think are very different customer needs. I was able to do quick tryouts of the LG G5, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the HP Elite x3 -- revealing three sophisticated companies with amazingly different views of the world. It's important to note: These aren't full product reviews (which we plan to have for you closer to when the products are released). This roundup is based on quick hands-on impressions with information based on pre-briefings and filled in by product demonstrators who may not have been fully informed. But even given that, you … [Read more...] about First look: The LG G5, Samsung Galaxy S7 and HP Elite x3 premiere at the Mobile World Congress
I am facing a predicament here that I’m sure many of my iPhone-reviewing brethren have experienced before: The Samsung Galaxy S7 is merely an incremental update over its predecessor, which makes it hard to justify the upgrade considering the Galaxy S6 was the top contender for 2015’s phone of the year. Is this what it feels like to review the “s” models of the iPhone? If it were an iPhone, the Galaxy S7 would be called the Galaxy S6s. It offers minor improvements, including slightly better battery life, a marginally better rear-facing camera, and a somewhat more refined metal-and-glass chassis. It also marks the return of the microSD expansion slot to Samsung’s devices, as well as dust and water resistance. Despite all these marketable features, however, I don’t think the Galaxy S7 offers enough of that “wow” factor to convince the Android-using population that it’s worth springing for—especially if you’re already … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S7 review: A mild improvement, but it’s still the best phone around

While the Samsung Galaxy S6 was quite a hit when it launched in 2015, some die-hard fans noticed that it was missing a critical feature: Expandable storage. Yep, Samsung dropped the microSD slot on the Galaxy S6, but it brought it back with the next year's model, the Galaxy S7. Having the option to save files like photos to a microSD card makes it easier to keep the on-board storage freed up, and to transfer those files to other devices. Fortunately, it's a simple process to set your microSD card as the default storage option in your Galaxy S7. Here's how. SEE: Samsung Galaxy S7 review (CNET) The first thing to note is the placement of the microSD card slot. It is located on top of the device, and can be opened by inserting a SIM card removal tool or an unfolded paper clip into the small hole located next to it. This slot also holds a SIM card for the device. Once you have opened the slot and inserted the microSD card, make sure to properly close it so that it is … [Read more...] about How to save Samsung Galaxy S7 photos to an SD card

A durable work phone is a dependable work phone. And they don't come much tougher than Samsung's Galaxy S7 Active, a bruiser of a smartphone that packs all the best productivity-boosting features of the standard Galaxy S7 into a much tougher shell. And while most "rugged" smartphones are bulky eyesores, this one doesn't look half bad. It's only available through AT&T, though, so it's not an option for everyone.Durable devices aren't just for construction workers and outdoor enthusiasts.
