Sept. 9, 1999, is one of the critical pre-Y2K dates, one closely related to the problems that will come at year-end, and a key indicator of how well companies have prepared for Y2K. The Nines Problem is related to the practice, mostly among older COBOL programmers, of indicating that the end of a file would be reached on a nonsense date, which they entered in their code as "9999." It's how the programmers told the application to "stop." They assumed that at no time would the program reach a date actually represented by four nines in succession, and for the most part they were right. If properly formatted, a calendar will not generate the string of nines. But, some programmers created a problem, using date formats that can produce the dreaded 9999. Sept. 9, because it is the ninth day of the ninth month of the ninety-ninth year of the century, is thought to be a date when the Nines Problem will strike. April 9, which was the 99th day of the year, was another potential Nines Problem … [Read more...] about Sept. 9 and the Nines Problem
Apple tends not to vary its yearly release schedule to any great degree, so the month of August has become a time of rampant iPhone and iPad speculation as the Cupertino company gets ready to introduce new products in the fall. The latest rumor suggests Sept. 9 is the date we’ll get an official look at Apple’s kit for 2015.That’s according to a report in BuzzFeed that relies on “sources familiar with Apple’s plans” — presumably not Tim Cook, but someone with at least some access inside the company. What’s more, Apple is said to be rolling all of its iPhone and iPad announcements into one event this year, whereas in the past it’s saved the new iPad reveals until October. With sales of the tablet dwindling it’s possible that Apple doesn’t think it’s worth its own event now.But that’s not all, BuzzFeed says: The event is also going to see the introduction of the long-awaited Apple TV revamp, something … [Read more...] about Is Apple plotting a huge event for Sept. 9?
Although all the talk surrounding Apple’s upcoming event next Wednesday involves the announcements of new iPhones and iPads, the company could sneak in a pair of low-key announcements as well, based on reports by The New York Times and Apple Insider.According to the outlets, Apple will announce new metal finishes for its wearable, the Apple Watch, with one of the options being a cheaper version of the already-expensive 18-karat gold Apple Watch, which currently starts at $10,000. As for the other materials, the rumored options include white gold, titanium, and ceramic. Carbon fiber and rubber are also rumored to be other materials possibly offered to customers.Another announcement includes, interestingly enough, Apple revealing a keyboard for the iPad. Apple is reportedly “putting the finishing touches” on this revamped iPad keyboard, which “may” launch this year. It’s unknown whether this keyboard will be of the … [Read more...] about Apple could sneak in a few surprises for the Apple Watch and iPad during Sept. 9 event
Apple disappointed fans of its iPad Mini last year when it released an update to the 7.9-inch iPad that was so minimal it was basically negligible. Luckily, the company may already be working on the next-generation of its smaller tablet, the iPad Mini 4. Here’s everything we know so far about the next iPad Mini: Updated on 09-02-2015 by Kyle Wiggers: Added rumored release date. Similar design, but no rotation lockThe first iPad Mini signaled a design change for future iPads, which crossed over to the larger 9.7-inch iPad. Now, it seems that the iPad Mini may take a few design cues from the iPad Air 2. Japanese blog Macotakara, which has a reliable track record when it comes to new Apple devices, claims the diminutive new iPad will match the Air 2’s impressive 6.1mm thickness — slightly north of a millimeter thinner than the current-gen iPad mini. A recently leaked rendering from @OnLeaks corroborates that measurement:Leaked photos … [Read more...] about iPad Mini 4 rumors: Could be unveiled as soon as Sept. 9
Apple will be announcing…something on Sept. 9, according to the technology news site, re/code.net. But if re/code knows what it is, it is not saying. The brief post is distilled into a single sentence: “Apple has scheduled a big media event for Tuesday, Sept. 9 — a date to which Apple numerologists will strain to attribute significance,” writes re/code’s John Paczkowski. And that’s it.+More on Network World: Drive-cloning utilities: The best Mac apps for making a bootable backup+One can’t call this a story, let alone a post. And Paczkowski cites no sources whatsoever, even the usual vague suspects such as “people familiar with the situation.” The credibility of the claim hinges entirely on Paczkowski’s reputation: he’s a veteran tech reporter, formerly with The Wall Street Journal’s AllThingsD website. He has demonstrated that he has a lot of knowledgeable industry contacts who are willing to talk to him.But … [Read more...] about What Will Apple Unveil on Sept. 9?
Now that Apple has confirmed it's planning an invitation-only bash September 9 in San Francisco, our time to speculate is running short. What new stuff is coming?First, let's scratch the much-anticipated Apple tablet off the list. While there's little doubt that Cupertino is cooking up some sort of iPod touch-on-steroids device -- or perhaps something more sophisticated -- the latest rumors say the device won't debut before next year.--Besides, the caption on Apple's September invite reads: "It's only rock and roll, but we like it." A clue?"I think that's a bit of a hint that it's not going to be a tablet," says Michael Gartenberg, an analyst for market researcher Interpret. "This is a music event, not a tablet introduction."Which means an iPod-themed event. "It is September. The leaves start to turn, and that's typically when Apple refreshes a new bumper crop of iPods," Gartenberg adds.So what's coming? "I expect the iPod line up to get fully refreshed," says IDC analyst Danielle … [Read more...] about Apple’s Sept. 9 Event: 5 Hot Bets
Apple will host its yearly iPhone event on Wednesday, Sept. 9, where it will unveil new smartphones and perhaps a revamped Apple TV, according to a report Friday."The company intends to hold a special event the week of Sept. 7, with Wednesday the 9th being the most likely date," said BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski, who when he was with Re/Code and before that, the Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD website, correctly pegged several years' worth of presentation dates.Sept. 9 fits with previous iPhone cycles.Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012; the iPhone 5S and 5C on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013; and last year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on Tuesday, Sept. 9.While Apple's timing has become predictable, a Wednesday event would be a day later in the week than the last two years.Wednesday is more likely because of the late Labor Day holiday in the U.S., which falls on Sept. 7. Apple probably pushed the event back a day because of that holiday; if it had held it Tuesday, its own teams … [Read more...] about Pencil in Sept. 9 for new iPhones

Apple today said that it would present a live webcast of its Sept. 9 event, where the company is expected to unveil one or more new iPhones and perhaps also show the long-rumored "iWatch" -- a catchall nickname for an expected line of wearable devices. In a small mention on the home page of its website, Apple noted that the event would be webcast starting at 10 a.m. Pacific time (1 p.m. Eastern time) on Tuesday. As has been the case with previous live broadcasts, Apple will limit this one to people using Safari on OS X or iOS, or its Apple TV peripheral. Windows users will be out of luck unless they have a virtual machine running OS X.Apple used the same "Wish we could say more" tagline in the promotion for the webcast that it used in the media and analyst invitations that went out last week. The event will take place at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts, which is on the campus of De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif. The Flint Center seats 2,400 -- significantly more than either … [Read more...] about Apple to webcast iPhone event on Sept. 9
The iPhone 6's unveiling date has been all but confirmed to be Sept. 9, and it's not the only new gadget we might see that day. According to reports from Re/code, Apple's long rumored iWatch will be revealed alongside its smartphone cousin, in what could be one of Apple's biggest product launch events yet. While this latest report conflicts with rumors about the iWatch's purported October launch window, it makes a whole lot of sense for Apple to debut its first-ever wearable alongside the highly anticipated iPhone 6. The smartwatch has been rumored to function as a companion device that requires an iPhone to function, and showing off the two devices in unison could ultimately be what sells consumers on Apple's entry into the already-crowded wearables space. MORE: Why the iWatch Already Beats Android WearIf the iWatch lives up to speculation, the device will sport a curved OLED display, and will presumably deliver iOS notifications and apps to your wrist.
