Read our full Sharp Aquos Crystal review.Phone design is stagnant. We’re surrounding by more dull, faceless copycats than a meeting of the V for Vendetta fan club. Take a look at Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy devices, and it’s almost impossible to tell a Galaxy Core from the Galaxy Grand Neo. Then, just as you settle on which one is which, one turns out to be the Galaxy Fresh. It’s not only Samsung that’s stuck in a rut; LG, HTC, and Nokia all produce identical smartphones not even a mother could tell apart. We’re surrounding by more dull, faceless copycats than a meeting of the V for Vendetta fan club.Yes, we’ve seen a few deviations recently, such as the LG Flex and the Galaxy Round, but they haven’t really caught on, due to high pricing or restricted availability. What we want is a company to shake things up, bring something new, and make it available to as many people as possible. Amazingly, we don’t have to dream of such a thing … [Read more...] about Remember when phones actually looked different from one another? Sharp does.
Read our full Sharp Aquos Crystal review.Japanese network Softbank announced the arrival of two new Sharp Aquos smartphones earlier this week, both of which boast amazing bezel-less displays, and the good news is one will be coming to Sprint in the near future. The two phones are the Aquos Crystal and Aquos Crystal X, and it’s the former which will hit Softbank-owned Sprint. Updated on 08-19-2014 by Andy Boxall: Sprint has confirmed the Aquos Crystal will be out soon, and that it will also be sold through Boost and Virgin too. We’ve also added in new images of the phone. When we talk about a screen’s bezel, we’re referring to the area surrounding the display not made up by screen itself. These days it can be slim, look at the LG G3 for example, but it’s still noticeable, particularly on aging hardware like the iPhone 5/iPhone 5S. The Aquos Crystal shows just how amazing a phone looks with an edge-to-edge – or frameless, as Sharp describes it – … [Read more...] about Forget the bezel, the Sprint-bound Sharp Aquos Crystal doesn’t have one (Updated)
Struggling electronics maker Sharp said Monday it is grappling with how to reform its LCD panel business, but has yet to make any decisions.Kyodo News and other media reported that Sharp plans to spin off its business for small and mid-size LCD panels, used in smartphones and other mobile devices, by getting the state-backed Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) to invest ¥100 billion (US$840 million) in a new subsidiary.INCJ would control a roughly 40 percent stake in the LCD subsidiary, according to the reports. Sharp, however, denied that any plans have been made regarding its own business.“We are currently considering various possibilities for fundamental structural reforms including LCD business, but there are no specific decisions made at this time,” Sharp spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama said via email. She added that the company is reviewing its medium-term management plan and the results will be announced around May.In its latest earnings release covering … [Read more...] about Sharp mulls overhaul of LCD business amid fierce competition
Sharp has developed a 5.5-inch display with 3860 x 2160 pixel resolution, which is equivalent to “ultra high definition,” also known as 4K.The prototype LCD display, which could be used in smartphones in the future, has a pixel density of 806 pixels per inch (ppi) and was shown off last week at the China Information Technology Expo in Shenzhen, China. It was part of a larger, 12.5-inch IGZO panel.Sharp hasn’t decided on a schedule for mass production yet. “Currently there are no driver ICs for small 4K panels, so the panel is not ready for mass production at this point,” Sharp spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama said via email. The company wants to develop and mass-produce 4K screens for clients’ phones but it’s too early to say whether they will be used in Sharp’s own Aquos line of smartphones, she added.By comparison, Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and a density of 401 ppi.Sharp regularly … [Read more...] about Sharp develops 4K smartphone display, undecided on manufacturing plan
Sharp’s Roku 55-inch class 4K UHD (model LC-55LBU591U) is one of the better entry-level TVs we’ve seen recently—although it’s actually manufactured by Hisense under a 5-year licensing deal the two companies signed in 2015. This TV delivers a great interface (powered by Roku), and a better-than-average image for $600 ($479.99 at Best Buy at the time of this review). That said, it doesn’t look as nice as the last the Sharp TV we looked at—the Aquos N7000—which was actually manufactured by Sharp. The LC-55 employs blue-skewed LED backlighting, and the motion isn’t as smooth as we’d like. But we can say that about nearly everything else in this price range. The LC-55 is good smart TV for the money. The LC-55 renders images on a 54.6-inch (55-inch class), LED-backlit, 3840 x 2160 4K UHD LCD panel. The TV as a whole is modestly stylish, though with today’s super-thin bezels, appearance isn’t a huge issue with any … [Read more...] about Sharp Roku TV review: A good entry-level 4K UHD TV
The Sharp Aquos Crystal is a big, sleek smartphone you can get for cheap. The budget handset offers a striking edge-to-edge screen and premium good looks, without the premium price. But it has the shortcomings you expect from a budget phone, including an older processor and lackluster battery life. Check out a full review of the Sharp Aquos Crystal at our sister site Laptop Mag, or read on to see how it performs as a work phone. Pros: Large display: The Aquos Crystal sports a large 5-inch display, a feature you won't find on many smartphones at this price point. A big screen is great for screen-intensive productivity tasks like viewing or editing a spreadsheet. Premium design: It's also pretty sleek for a budget smartphone. The Crystal sports an eye-catching edge-to-edge display with razor-thin bezels, which also makes the phone easier to grip. Value: The Crystal is a pretty affordable smartphone, so it's a good pick for budget-minded business users. You can get it through Sprint … [Read more...] about Sharp Aquos Crystal: Is it Good for Business?
