LOS ANGELES -- Barbra Streisand may draw top billing at Thursday's Hollywood party honoring Vice President Al Gore. But nearby will be another star, who shines even brighter in the Gore-for-president firmament. His name is Chris Korge, and he is a Miami-based lobbyist for BellSouth Corp. (bls). Over the past year and a half, he has raised more than $5 million for Gore and the Democratic party. At the Streisand event, he is expected to bring in a further $50,000. Korge stands at the front of a phalanx of people in the communications industry who have written and solicited checks in support of Gore. The vice president's career has, to some extent, been defined by his interest in communications. He coined the term "information superhighway," fought for funds for high-speed computers, and championed the landmark Telecommunications Act of 1996, which reduced regulation for much of the industry. Now the communications industry -- an increasingly fractious network of telephone, … [Read more...] about Telecom industry supporting Gore

In the far reaches of Alaska, the Internet has become as integral a part of the classroom as a blackboard and textbooks. But at least three school districts in the state are going without online access while administrators await a decision on the fate of the federal program known as E-rate. Apple is one of America’s most successful companies, but it’s also one of America’s biggest financial successes. Apple pocketed $9.5 billion in pure profit last quarter; the company employs over 50,000 people in the U.S. doing everything from R&D to running data centers to selling earbuds in Apple Stores – and Apple claims it’s indirectly responsible for as many as 600,000 other U.S. jobs, ranging from app developers to bloggers who cover the latest Apple rumors. (That’s apparently moved from being a “thing” to a “viable career.”)Apple’s economic clout is why CEO Tim Cook, CFO Peter Oppenheimer, and head of Tax Operations Peter Bullock were called to testify before the U.S. Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent subcommittee on Investigations. Apple has not been accused of violating any law, but the context of the hearing is that Apple is skipping out on billions in corporate … [Read more...] about Tim Cook: Apple’s elaborate money shuffle isn’t a gimmick. Happy New Year to all our readers. I’m not a lawyer but I play one on TV. But seriously! This is an article I have been meaning to write ever since we performed an IT audit for a large law firm a year or so ago. The firm was responding to the HIPAA law that requires all third-party vendors working with healthcare organizations to have a Risk Assessment. This further proves my point that most businesses won’t do much in the area of cyber security or compliance, not even an IT risk assessment unless required by law. It’s hard to believe that even at this stage with countless breaches over the past few years Target, Sony, Anthem, OPM, Yahoo and so on. It’s no longer a matter of if you will be breached, but rather a matter of when or have you already been breached and you just don’t know it. Every person, SMB or large corporation that has an internet connection is vulnerable. So every connected device on the internet must meet minimum compliance standards and … [Read more...] about Law firms subject to same cyber risk as others, but is compliance required?
