NO, both newly ordained video elite and newly dissed "non-populars," are lamenting a YouTube calculated business move that moves YouTube away from its original community spirit. The chosen video few are wondering if they are selling themselves short to YouTube parent Google while the masses of plain old YouTubers are crying foul and pleaing for equal treatment. Is feel good YouTube on its way to becoming a big, bad wolf in sheep's clothing? How YouTube lost its video soul, big time I analyzed upon the proclamation earlier this month that YouTube "Elevates Most Popular Users to Partners." I also underscored Google’s YouTube divides community: Advertising rules, not users. YouTubers concurr. Legions of YouTube users have not only been "venting" their frustration over the new YouTube tiered community, but decrying how YouTube has, in fact, lost its soul, big time. Just yesterday … [Read more...] about YouTube to video artists: Wolf in sheep’s clothing?
Amazon’s Video Instant library isn’t exactly bereft of blockbusters — between Emmy-winning original series like Transparent and content deals with Fox, HBO, and others, the ever-expanding collection’s an impressively well-rounded one. If YouTube started as a place for people to upload low-res videos, Google’s global 2010 ‘most popular’ video list shows just how fast the model is evolving into something nakedly commercial. If YouTube started as a place for people to upload low-res videos, Google's global 2010 'most popular' video list shows just how fast the model is evolving into something nakedly commercial.First posted as recently as 1 August, the most viewed 'ordinary' video on YouTube to November was the 'bed intruder song, which has been watched 48 million times and rising. In second place came the 'TIK TOK KESHA Parody', which has been seen 51 million times and was presumably relegated to second place because it has been around for much longer. The list descends through the viral 'annoying orange' (27 million) through parody advert, 'The Man Your Man Could Smell Like' (24 million) to more traditional YouTube upload fare, 'Jimmy surprises Bieber fan' (19 million). What is striking is how few of … [Read more...] about YouTube 2010 ‘top videos’ list ruled by music

Threats of violence may have scared off major theatre chains from showing The Interview, but thanks to its digital release, many viewers are still getting a chance to see the latest from Seth Rogen and James Franco. The Verge reports that, as of Friday, the film was the most popular thing on YouTube. As of this writing, The Interview tops YouTube’s list of the Top Films Videos, although YouTube doesn’t show how many views it’s received—presumably at the behest of Sony Pictures. Why this matters: The Interview was a bit of a special case given all the publicity surrounding the film—and the fact that relatively few theaters showed it—but it does show that there may be a future to same-day digital and theatrical releases. Going to watch a film at a theater will always be an event worth attending for many, but for the wait-until-it’s-out-on-video-crowd, same-day digital releases would be a godsend. If we end up seeing more same-day … [Read more...] about ‘The Interview’ Makes it Big on YouTube, Becomes One of the Web’s Top Videos
